In-Situ Resources Utilisation (ISRU) represents one of the most interesting steps for enabling human long term missions and an attractive technical and commercial challenge for current space exploration community. Moreover, Moon is rich of several materials among which Iron, Nickel, Gold, and Platinum group metals from impacted meteorites, Aluminium, Titanium, Silicium, Oxygen, Helium3 and other volatiles, Iced-Water (?), etc.

Due to renewed interest in exploring our space neighbor, high precision navigation systems and global autonomous communication systems are becoming very important. Many navigation systems using different technologies are currently under development. In particular, optical navigation systems are promising, but their limits depend on light conditions and knowledge of the surface.

MUL2 group that participates to the Google Lunar X PRIZE with the TEAM ITALIA is organizing the next ECCOMAS Thematic Conference on Smart Structures and Materials SMART2013. The ECCOMAS SMART 2013 is the sixth in a series which started in 2001 and has progressed successfully over the years. Past conference venues were located in Portugal, Poland and Germany. It will held in Italy at the Politecnico di Torino, Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering June 24 – 26, 2013. The main topics of the conference will be related to the following areas :
