Lander-Rover-Rocket
The lunar touchdown phase of this mission starts with a launch from the lunar orbiter, similar to the MoonLITE (Moon Lightweight Interior and Telecoms Experiment) project, a proposed collaboration by the British government and NASA. (http://www.technovelgy.com/ct/Science-Fiction-News.asp?NewsNum=1468). A compact, spin stabilized rocket will be jettisoned from the orbiter, 40 km above the lunar surface. The objective is to land this very small spacecraft softly on the lunar surface so that the nose cone of the rocket is aimed upwards.
At a set distance from the lunar surface, the rocket engine will be ignited to quickly reduce the speed of descent:
