4WD rover design started
Team member Russell Cameron has started the 4WD rover design, capable to travel 5km autonomous over very rough terrain.
The picture below shows the wheel construction. These gears will allow our rovers drive motors to be housed within the wheels themselves so that there will be more room in the chassis for electronics. Furthermore the simple gear system and large teeth will tolerate a reasonable amount of dust should the seal fail. In this case the single bearing and its seal are the only weak point.
So far the four gears have been manufactured. The gears have a ratio of 25:1 and an outside diameter of 160mm.
