Springing forward to a new design!
We're coming up on another new Moon in the next few days, and in the next month, we'll be unveiling the baseline mission concept for the Lunar Lion! We've gone from "back-of-the-napkin" to a mission that closes* in only a handful of days. The team is staying focused on the essentials, making sure that we've understood the requirements of the mission, translated them into requirements for the spacecraft and accompanying systems, while leaving the door open to advancing scientific goals beyond the X Prize itself.
I would like to express my admiration for the students and faculty that gave up their spring break to stay closeted up day after day, to bring the design to closure. I would also like to express my thanks to those who help us get to where we are, but that will come with the unveiling of the design, so stay tuned.
Following up on my previous posting, I can report that MESSENGER has successfully entered Mercury orbit! the 17th was an exciting day for space exploration!
* "closed" is the term that space systems engineers used to indicate that all aspects of the mission have been determined and that the whole package fits on the chosen launch vehicle.
