It's a New Moon Tonight!

On my iGoogle homepage, I keep a gadget that shows the phase of the Moon, and right now it shows 0% full. But lovers of the Moon don't need a gadget to tell them the phase. I watch the Moon every month and always enjoy both the overwhelming presence of the full Moon, lighting up the nights, and the darkness of a New Moon, revealing the fainter stars to the backyard astronomer. Between my dad taking me out to see the constellations and Chet Raymo's Astronomy class at Stonehill College, I learned to love the stars and the Moon. Get out tonight and enjoy the night sky - drive away from city lights if you can and try to glimpse the Milky Way, so high overhead during this last month of winter. The Penn State Lunar Lion Team is busily working through detailed concept development. Next week will be an intensive study to nail down the most crucial details of the mission. We've had considerable interest here on campus from students and researchers alike as well as inquires from Penn State alumni. The more people that I talk to, the more I realize how many share my passion for the night sky. Look for further updates on the team's progress and the spacecraft design in the weeks to come.
