Als wir Ende 2009 unseren ersten Rover Prototypen, Asimov R1 Junior, zusammengebaut haben, durften wir dafür die Räumlichkeiten einer bekannten Berliner Produktionsfirma nutzen. Dieser Rover wurde dann auf dem 26C3 das erste Mal der Weltöffentlichkeit vorgestellt. Hier noch ein Video von der Entstehung des Rovers.

Ihr habt euch sicherlich schon gefragt, wo die schönen Fotos unseres Rovers herkommen. Nun, in Berlin hat sich ein Freund von uns dazu bereit erklärt, Asimov zu einem Fotoshooting mitzunehmen. Dabei sind über 200 Aufnahmen entstanden, von denen ihr schon einige in unseren Blogposts etc. gesehen habt. Und er hat auch schon für unseren neuen Rover, Asimov R3 Junior, zugesagt. Wir sind gespannt und freuen uns schon auf den nächsten Auftritt Asimovs als Fotomodell.

You’ve probably been wondering where those beautiful photos of our Rover come from. Well, a friend of ours from Berlin has agreed to take Asimov to a photo shoot. It caused more than 200 recordings, some of which you’ve already seen in our blog posts, etc. And he already has promised to help us with our new Rover, Asimov R3 Junior. We are excited and looking forward Asimov’s next grand entrance as a model.

Wenn ihr euch fragt, wieso die drei auf den Fotos diesen Rover in einem Hotelzimmer zusammenbasteln, dann hat das einen sehr einfachen Grund. Für die »International Space Development Conference« (ISDC) 2011 in Huntsville (Alabama) haben wir einen unserer R0 Rover in die USA verschickt. Und weil wir nicht nur für unsere Mondmission einen sehr engen Zeitplan haben, ist auch dieses Paket “just-in-time” eingetroffen. Und deswegen hatten unsere Kollegen Wes, Eric und Andrew an einem Abend der Konferenz noch das Vergnügen, in einer kleinen Hardware-Hacking Session den Rover komplett zusammen zubauen. Die Platinen waren glücklicherweise schon vorbestückt und auch die Servos vorher schon gehackt. Am nächsten Tag wurde der Rover dann noch während einer Pause programmiert und lauffähig gemacht. Dabei ist dieses Video hier entstanden.

If you look at the pictures and ask yourself “Why are they building a rover in a hotel room?” Well, there’s a rather simple reason. We send one of our R0 Rover to the US for the »International Space Development Conference« (ISDC) 2011 in Huntsville (Alabama). And because we not just have a very tight schedule for our mission to the moon, that package arrived “just in time”. And that’s why our three team members had the pleasure to assemble the rover in a hardware hacking session. Luckily the PCBs were pre-equipped and the servos pre-hacked. The next day during a break the rover was programmed and made fully functional, that’s where this video was taken.

Anfang 2010 hat Robert Bill Gates in Berlin getroffen und ihm von unsere Mondmission erzählt. Er war beeindruckt von unserem Team und erstaunt, dass die Arbeit komplett in unserer Freizeit passiert.

Wir haben uns in den letzten Tagen zusammengesetzt und etwas Besonderes ausgedacht. Einen Adventskalender. Nun ja gut, erfunden haben wir ihn jetzt nicht und wir werden dieses Jahr auch nicht den einzigen Adventskalender haben, aber wir werden einen besonderen Adventskalender haben. Es gibt bei uns viele Bilder aus den letzten paar Jahren, die noch nicht das Licht der Öffentlichkeit erblickt haben und das wollen wir im Rahmen des Adventskalenders ändern. Es gibt von uns ab heute bis zum 24. Dezember jeden Tag ein Bild und seine Geschichte. Wir wünschen euch viel Spass und Freude beim Bilder angucken!

We got together in the past few days and came up with something special. An advent calendar. Well well, we haven't invented it actually and we won't have the only advent calendar this year, but we will have a special advent calendar. We have many pictures from the past few years which aren't public yet but we'd like to change that with this years advent calendar. From today until the 24th of December each day we will show you a new picture and it's story. Enjoy and have fun looking at the photos!

Am 18.09.2011 war Tag der Luft- und Raumfahrt beim DLR in Köln-Porz. Das deutsche Pendant zur NASA hatte für einen Tag seine Türen geöffnet und so der breiten Öffentlichkeit die Möglichkeit gegeben die neuesten Enwicklungen mit eigenen Augen zu bestaunen. Auch wir haben dort unseren Asimov ausgestellt, Fragen beantwortet und unsere Mission erklärt. Außerdem hatten wir unser Mondrover-Spielfeld mit den kleinen R0 Rovern dabei und es hat augenscheinlich sehr viel Spass gemacht, die kleinen Gefährte durch die Gegend zu steuern.

On the 18th of September 2011 the DLR in Köln-Porz organized the German Aerospace Day. The German Pendant of the NASA opened its doors for the public and gave everybody the possibility to marvel the latest inventions. And beside the DLR we also had the possibility to present Asimov and our mission there and answered all the questions of the very interested visitors. We also had our moon-rover game field with the small R0 rovers with us and obviously it was much fun to navigate them on the moon.

If something’s changed since the 1960s in regards of getting to the moon, it’s definitely not motivation; it’s the amount of paperwork that needs to be done!
Today our org team, who deal with all kinds of paperwork like contracts, non-disclosures and bills, gave us some insight into the amount we’re talking about. What you see here is just part of the PTS paperwork of 2010 and 2011.
Six ring binders full of internal NDAs, external NDAs, contracts, receipts, quarterly billings and corporate documents. Note this picture is missing three more ring binders of bills and tax documents for the past months.

Vor kurzem gab es über unseren Partner Schneider-Kreuznach einen interessanten Bericht, der auf die Fertigung der Objektive sowie die über 100 Jährige Geschichte der Firma eingeht. Der Mond ist auch ein Teil dieser Geschichte, denn es waren Objektive von Schneider-Kreuznach die das weltberühmte „Earth Rise“ Motiv (unten) aufgenommen haben. Der Mond ist auch ein Teil der Zukunft von Schneider-Kreuznach, denn zusammen mit unserem Team wollen wir erneut vom Mond aus einen Blick auf die Erde riskieren. Somit freuen wir uns sehr, ebenso in dem Beitrag vertreten zu sein.
Also wenn ihr schon immer erfahren wolltet wie Hochpräzisionsobjektive gefertigt werden und mit welcher Hilfe Asimov das „Licht der Welt erblickt“ schaut euch den Beitrag an.

In case you’re wondering what we’ve been up to, here’s a sneak peek not just behind, but also actually „before“ the screen. Right now we’re pushing development pretty hard to get many new prototypes lined up for an all-new release towards the end of November.
What’s been revealed so far is that there is going to be a new rover. However even “just” a new rover consists of dozens of subsystems like an onboard computer, a camera links, communications and of course motors. All these and many smaller parts have undergone multiple revisions and are now being integrated to flawlessly work together in an all-new self-contained system, the Asimov R3!

My first serious presentation was before 1400 attendees at the 26th Chaos Communication Congress (26C3) in Berlin, Germany, one of the biggest and most important hacker conventions worldwide. My second presentation was shortly afterward at O’Reilly Media for a markedly smaller and markedly different audience. That was a large difference, and it highlights one of the important public speaking strategies: know your audience. It is important to consider who will be sitting in front of you and listen to you, so you can adjust your presentation accordingly. You structure a presentation very differently when you are preparing it for a group of engineers, a general audience, or a group of potential investors or sponsors whom you have to thrill and sell your idea to.
