Contemplating! :)
Today I flew from Denmark to Italy, and in my luggage I had the Romit1 satellite, two computers, two radio amateur radios and a lot of cables.
Well actually, I had the whole thing in my hand luggage...since I did not dare check anything into the hold of the plane. So security checking was "interesting" :)
The trip was organised in the last minute, so I flew up on Sunday, with return today. Sunday was the day the time changed to summertime in Europe. That should have been no problem, BUT my mobile phone was too smart!! It updated its time (without asking!! :( ) in the middle of the night, with the consequence that the alarm went off one hour early at 05.00 am instead of 06.00. So I started the trip with some additional lack off sleep!!!
The purpose of the trip was to visit our provider Gomspace in Aalborg and get our cubesat ready for flight. In addition I bought a new test ground station for the mission, ICOM 821H (well known and respected among radio amateurs). I also brought back some triple junction solar cells, the "raw" cells, to be used to a experimental set up for solar panels for the next mission.
Regaring Romit 1, we had run into some software problems, among the various subsystem on board. The communication protocols are based on the Cube Sat Protocol, version 1.0, which is somewhat similar to the TCP/IP protocol we all use on the internet.
This protocol is still relatively new, and there are still issues to be defined and solved.
So yesterday Søren and I worked together with experts from Gomspace for the whole day, in order to finish all the outstanding issues on Romit1.
It was a very long day!! Aalborg is around 4.5 hours drive from Copenhagen, so we got op at 04.00 in order to be there shortly before 9. And then we worked with the Gomspace software and hardware experts for perhaps 10 hours.
It was not easy, and several times we where close to despair!! However in the end we managed to get all the functionality needed for Romit1 tested and working.
The current software state is thus that it works!! Well not everything, and maybe not all of it as well as it could, but this is not the important.
The important is, that based on what we have now, we are confident that we can do the rest of the software development for Romit1, so that we can fly this year.
Our launch date continues to slip, it is now scheduled for August. It would do our changes for success of Romit1 good, if it slipped for another month or two!!
Anyway, I have now been travelling for more than 20 hours out of the last 55 hours, and I am tired, so I will sign off now!!
More news, and also video about the trip, and the results and the future plans to come soon.
