Time to save the Space Technology budget!
Tomorrow (Thursday, July 23) the Senate Appropriations Committee will vote on the NASA budget, which so far in Congress has been rolled back from the great new direction proposed by the Administration to a jobs program for old-line aerospace companies and their too-expensive-to-use systems.
While we can't hope to kill the multi-billion-dollar disasters of Heavy Lift (aka Space Launch System) and the govt. owned Orion capsule, we have a shot at saving the Space Technology budget run out of the NASA Chief Technologist's office. That's because the two relevant House committees (Appropriations and Commerce) gave it full funding of $512 million. If the Senate Appropriations Committee also gives it full funding, then the hit it took in the Senate Commerce Committee ($225M) may be rolled back when these bills go to conference.
The list of members of the Senate Appropriations Committee can be found here: http://appropriations.senate.gov/about-members.cfm
The Space Technology budget will be openly competed (not reserved for certain NASA Centers) and is focused on the breakthrough innovations that GLXP teams can create. Today's the day to make contact -- they vote tomorrow!
