Lunar Roundup: Statesmen and Space Mining

Some pretty cool things happen when you're on the way to the Moon!

Visits from the President of Israel? Check. Building epic robots? Check. Inventing the lunar economy? Check.

It's all there---and then some---from just this past week! Here's the skinny on everything that happened:

Mining the Moon

Moon Express  gave one of the best-ever explanations of space mining in their chat with RT:

Stating themselves as a “resources company looking to mine the Moon”, they talk about:

  • How our understanding of the Moon’s resources has evolved over the past 10 years
  • Moon Express’ goals for mining the Moon in the next ‘10 to 20 years’
  • Platinum vs water and other resources
  • The ‘Queen Isabella’ problem (where too much gold from Central America ruined the Spanish economy in the 1500’s)

And a bunch more, so check out the video for one of the best interviews on space mining you could hope to find!

Moon Bounce

Team Synergy Moon  wants to send your pictures to the Moon!

Well, there and back again, anyways.

It’s their new Moonbounce program: they’ll use radio signals to ‘bounce’ your image (or recorded sound message) off the Moon!

They’ll schedule the moonbounce; let you know when it’s happening; and then send you a bunch of stats about it! (How long it took, etc.) They'll also be posting these publicly on their site, so this is a pretty fun project!

Building Synergy

And not ones to settle this week, Synergy Moon  also announced that their parts-manufacturing machine has arrived, and that they are going to commence the building of two separate Moon rovers (as a failsafe redundancy).

And they won’t be prototypes---they’ll be the real deal! Seems like they're well on their way to delivering some rovers.

Statesmen

Meanwhile, the one and only Newt Gingrich visited Penn State Lunar Lion , and ‘gushed’ about their project:

“It’s a groundbreaking project, all for one-tenth of what it would cost NASA.” [AP image via Gawker].

And not to be outdone, SpaceIL  was featured in a great article by the Jewish Faily Forward---including this photo of the President of Israel, Shimon Peres, chatting with their team!:

Rock Stars

I bet the student in the picture above felt like a rock star; and that's actually a big part of the team's goal!

Team SpaceIL  while being interviewed by another team, team ARCA  talked about how making scientists into 'rock stars' will get more people into the field:

The audio there is a little raw, but some really interesting points!

---

I’ll be rounding these up every week, so keep an eye here for the best developments from our very own moon race.
