Lunar Roundup: SpiderBots and Caves

Welcome to this week’s Lunar Roundup! A power rankings-style look at who & what’s been “Awesome!” over the last seven days of the Google Lunar X PRIZE.

Synergy Moon talked about their plans with swarm bots; VentureBeat featured Astrobotic's moon plans, including cave exploration; former Google Lunar X PRIZE chief Will Pomerantz Reddited about the competition; ARCA posted great photos from their ExoMars press conference; and Astrobotic posted their own technical feature.

The top five highlights for January 1st-January 7th, 2013:

---

1) The Swarm!

Synergy Moon talked about their plans for swarm bots, including ‘spider’ bots and ‘butterfly’ bots:

“The Spiders will be tiny robots, each designed to detect different elements or compounds.  They will report both visually and via radio, by emitting colors/packets to represent positive or negative findings of their targets.” -Sayandeep Khan

2) Skylights!

VentureBeat posted a great feature on Astrobotic's moon plans, including exploration of lunar caves and their 'skylights'!:

“Three locations have been found which have skylights on the order of 100 meters across. It’s a good parallel to where humans settled on earth. They chose caves because they provided shelter and protection.” -Astrobotic president John Thornton

A lunar skylight.

3) Recaps!

Over at the X PRIZE Reddit, former Google Lunar X PRIZE chief (and current Virgin Galactic VP) Will Pomerantz recapped the various team's 2012 in review posts!

4) Mars Press!

ARCA posted a bunch of great photos from their ExoMars mission press conference!

5) Gantry!
