Lunar Roundup: Mass Media

Welcome to this week’s Lunar Roundup! A power rankings-style look at who & what’s been “Awesome!” over the last seven days of the Lunar X PRIZE.

The journal Nature featured Astrobotic's cave plans; Robin Williams talked about the competition on David Letterman; Penn State Lunar Lion sat down for their awesome team summit interview; Space.com compared the competition to the gold rush; and Astrobotic talked about skylight exploration.

The top five highlights of November 13th-November 19th:

1) Spelunking!

The journal Nature featured Astrobotic’s plans to explore lunar caves:

“This is authentic exploration, this is the real deal. This is really going where none have gone before." - William ‘Red’ Whittaker

2) Letterman!

Actor Robin Williams talked about Moon Express---his son’s employer---on David Letterman!:

3) Lion’s Share!

4) Water Rush!

A Space.com article compared the teams’ race for water to the Gold Rush:

"’This is like the gold rush that led to the settlement of California,’ Phil Metzger, a physicist at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, said in a statement. ‘This is the water rush.’” -Space.com

NASA themselves are now developing their own water-rush rover---called RESOLVE:

5) Skylight!

Astrobotic also posted a great look at how to approach a lunar cave's skylight entrance:

"Once landed an anchor will be fired across the skylight opening with a tether attached. This tether will need to be strong and light weight." -Astrobotic's blog post
